Blog Post #5 - Completing My Final Product

Image
Hey everyone, For my fifth and final week, I put together everything that I learned in the last four weeks to finish  my final project . In the beginning, I was struggling with what I wanted my final project to be. I decided that I wanted to put together a video that would allow me to revisit all of my favorite road trips. By choosing certain video clips that I recorded and editing them to a song by one of my favorite artists, I hoped to recreate the feeling that I had while I was on these trips so I could look back on it and relive these experiences. While making my final project, I ran into a few difficulties. These, however, offered great learning experiences for me and aided in my understanding of video editing. Moore, Donavan (Oct 17, 2022). I had a vision for the video that I was going to create, but as I was creating the video, I re

Blog Post #4 - Applying Learned Skills and Using DaVinci Resolve

Getting Familiar with the Software Although I have done a lot of research about DaVinci Resolve, until this week, I hadn’t spent much time actually using the software. As a result, I spent this week practicing the skills I learned through Blackmagic Design’s tutorial videos. I used footage that I have captured from gameplay this keep because there are a variety of different types of clips. This allowed me to sort the files into categories using the tools found in the tutorials. Another reason I used these clips is that they are very casual clips that mostly only require cutting. Moreover, I am quite familiar with the clips that I used, so I was able to practice using DaVinci Resolve's color correction tools with video clips that I have a good reference for. By using clips I was comfortable with, I was able to familiarize myself with the program without becoming overwhelmed. Blog Post #3 - Learning How to Use DaVinci Resolve

To start my Genius Hour this week, I visited the DaVinci Resolve website and watched their two-part tutorial, Introduction to Editing. This tutorial starts by going over how to start a project based on your needs (ie. choosing a resolution, frame rate, etc.), and how to input and organize media (videos, pictures, audio, etc.). The tutorial discusses utilizing metadata, which is additional information that can be stored within the media files (ex. dates, locations, keywords, etc.). This metadata is important for finding media files when working on a large project. Then, using this metadata, I learned that I can create smart bins that will organize my clips for me, improving my workflow in the long run. Black Magic Design. (2022c). Editing on Laptop. Blog Post #2 - Finding Video Editing Software

Black Magic Design. (2022). Man editing video [Photograph]. Retrieved from  https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ca/products/davinciresolve By reading multiple online articles and watching YouTube videos, I have decided that the best video editing software for me to use for my project will be DaVinci Resolve. It is free-to-use for basic consumers, and it is a full-featured video-editing software (Dove, 2022). DaVinci Resolve is developed by Blackmagic Design, the same company that creates Blackmagic cinema cameras (Muchmore, 2022).  There is a paid tier that costs $415 that includes more advanced features, such as tracking and additional effects, but for my level of work, the free base model of the software is more than enough (Kevin Stratvert, 2021). Unlike many of the other free options that I was looking into, DaVinci Resolve does not have any watermarks or major limitations for its free tier (Moore, 2021). The development team is also very active, constantly adding new features to im

Blog Post #1 - Welcome!

Introduction: Hey everyone! This is my first update on my Genius Hour Project journey. My Genius Hour question is: “How can I improve my (beginner) video editing skills without it feeling like a “task” or losing my passion for it in the process?” My Genius Hour Project: For my final project, I would like to create some sort of video by editing clips from either different adventures that I have been on or gameplay clips that I have captured when playing with friends. When I was in high school, I volunteered at Rogers Television, where I edited video at a rudimentary level for a local television channel. Although I was very limited creatively within my volunteer position, I learned that an editor has a very important role in content creation because they are the people that put all a
