Blog Post #1 - Welcome!

Introduction:

Hey everyone! This is my first update on my Genius Hour Project journey. My Genius Hour question is: “How can I improve my (beginner) video editing skills without it feeling like a “task” or losing my passion for it in the process?”

My Genius Hour Project:

For my final project, I would like to create some sort of video by editing clips from either different adventures that I have been on or gameplay clips that I have captured when playing with friends.

My Inspiration:

Video editing has always been a passion of mine. When I was in high school, I volunteered at Rogers Television, where I edited video at a rudimentary level for a local television channel. Although I was very limited creatively within my volunteer position, I learned that an editor has a very important role in content creation because they are the people that put all aspects of the creative piece into action. This allows editors to tell a story and express their own identity through their work. In an increasingly digital age where people are capturing more videos, I believe it is important that people know how to edit the videos so that they can tell their own narrative.

Main Steps:

For this project, I will need to determine what software will best suit my needs by accounting for price, features, and availability; I will need to decide what type of video I would like to edit; I will look to other creators to find inspiration; and I will need to find new ways to make my workflow more efficient, such as utilizing macros, hotkeys, and shortcuts, and establishing the most efficient order of processes.

Goals:

Through this project, I hope to expand my knowledge of video editing and learn new skills, such as colour correction, as well as the different types of cuts and when to use them. I would also like to create a story through my edits. I would also like to establish my own aesthetic and style of editing that is unique to me.
