Blog Post #2 - Finding Video Editing Software
By reading multiple online articles and watching YouTube videos, I have decided that the best video editing software for me to use for my project will be DaVinci Resolve. It is free-to-use for basic consumers, and it is a full-featured video-editing software (Dove, 2022). DaVinci Resolve is developed by Blackmagic Design, the same company that creates Blackmagic cinema cameras (Muchmore, 2022).
There is
a paid tier that costs $415 that includes more advanced features, such as
tracking and additional effects, but for my level of work, the free base model
of the software is more than enough (Kevin Stratvert, 2021). Unlike many of the
other free options that I was looking into, DaVinci Resolve does not have any
watermarks or major limitations for its free tier (Moore, 2021).
The development team is also very active, constantly adding new features to improve people’s workflow (Black Magic Design, 2022b). The program is also available on multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, which is something I am looking for to ensure that I am not locked into a specific platform.
DaVinci Resolve also includes a professional-level color-correction tool called Fusion that has been used by many different high-level production companies for movies such as Dune, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Emily the Criminal, and Black Widow (Black Magic Design, 2022a). This is important to me because one of the major skills that I would like to learn through this project is color correction.
The only downside to the program is that it is quite different than Adobe Premier which I have used in the past, and it apparently can be quite complex for newcomers (Baxter, 2022). This means that I will likely need to take a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of the program.
Blackmagic includes free tutorial videos about how to use DaVinci Resolve on their website TechGumbo, 2021). I will be exploring these tutorials more in future weeks to help me gain a deeper understanding of the software and how to use it efficiently and effectively.
